Moscow Wins 2030 Weightlifting Worlds, Russia’s First Since War
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) confirmed the Russian capital’s selection alongside that of Ahmedabad, India, which will stage the 2029 edition.
IWF General Secretary Jose Quinones addressed the bidding cities in the announcement, saying, “All the bids we received were excellent and we are sure that the championships in your respective countries will be a huge success.”
The award is the latest sign of Russia’s gradual return to international sport after years of restrictions tied to the war in Ukraine. In July, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) provisionally lifted its suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, a move that could clear the way for Russian athletes at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Moscow’s last turn as host came in 1983.
