FIE Restores Full Participation Rights for Russian, Belarusian Fencers

(MENAFN) The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has removed all restrictions imposed on Russian and Belarusian fencers in connection with the Ukraine conflict, allowing athletes from both countries to compete internationally under their national flags and with their national anthems.

The decision marks a significant shift from measures introduced in 2022, when many international sports organizations suspended athletes from Russia and Belarus or limited their participation following the outbreak of the conflict. In subsequent years, some federations allowed competitors from the two countries to return under neutral status, while others gradually eased or eliminated restrictions.

According to a statement issued by the FIE, the new policy will take effect at the 2026 Senior World Championships in Hong Kong, scheduled to take place from July 22 to July 30.

“The decision reflects the FIE’s commitment to the fundamental principles of the Olympic Charter, including non-discrimination, equal treatment, and the universality of sport,” the federation said.

Russian and Belarusian athletes had already been permitted to return to individual fencing competitions under neutral status in 2023. Restrictions on team participation were later relaxed in 2025, paving the way for the latest decision restoring full national representation.

The move follows similar actions by other international sports governing bodies. Last month, gymnastics authorities approved the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competition under their national symbols after a lengthy suspension. Other sports organizations, including those overseeing judo, taekwondo, aquatic sports and wrestling, have also removed or eased restrictions on competitors from the two countries.

Russian officials have consistently criticized sports-related sanctions, arguing that political considerations should not influence athletic competition. They have also accused some countries of applying inconsistent standards when dealing with athletes from nations involved in armed conflicts.

The FIE's decision represents another step in the broader trend of international sports federations reassessing restrictions introduced in 2022 and reconsidering the participation status of Russian and Belarusian athletes.
